Workshops

Delivering the difficult message.

‘Stepping into the forum scenario was a game-changer. The skills practice equipped me with tools to navigate emotional reactions more effectively.’
Senior leader, Global Telecoms Organisation
The Problem

Project X, initially successful, is having to stand down approximately 2,000 employees, contradicting the earlier promise of job security for all. Senior management needs help delivering these difficult messages.

The Diagnosis

The company will offer a leavers package to everyone affected, with support in finding external job opportunities. Luft will help with a learning experience and strategies to navigate staff unrest and high emotional reactions.

The Design

Luft designed an interactive and immersive workshop to help managers think about the upcoming challenges, share their hopes and fears, and deliver those challenging messages with skill while managing hostile reactions with empathy and understanding.

Using forum theatre, skilled actor-coaches portrayed the scenario where senior leaders had to deliver difficult news to a large group, showing behaviours to avoid. Participants then guided and instructed the actors to a better outcome.

After facilitated discussion and interactive activities, breakout sessions allowed smaller groups to practise bespoke scenarios in a safe space, receiving real-time and supportive feedback.

The Delivery

Senior leaders underwent an immersive, on-your-feet training session to help them deliver challenging messages to groups of project managers and direct reports, emphasising emotional reaction management and composure in challenging situations.

Through energised and dynamic activities, the group explored their hopes and fears, their strengths and weaknesses, and their expectations.

The forum scenario simulated delivery of a tough message, enabling real-time feedback and skill development.

Participants practised delivering and receiving difficult messages, fostering feedback in a peer-to-peer setting.

Breakout sessions further developed the skills practice, enhancing their capacity to manage emotional reactions and deliver messages with impact and confidence.

The Evaluation

Participants left the session with proven frameworks, strategies and personal actions. They felt more confident to engage in these tricky conversations.

‘The forum scenario was brilliant and allowed me to think how I might deliver a difficult message. The feedback and guidance provided by the facilitators was so helpful in building my communication skills and self-confidence.’

‘The skills practice sessions in the breakout rooms was scary at first but by the end, I felt much more confident. The facilitators were supportive and encouraging and really helped make the whole experience impactful.’

‘Stepping into the forum scenario was a game-changer and fun. The skills practice sessions helped me and equipped me with practical tools to navigate emotional reactions more effectively.’

What clients say

In their words

Executive coaching

The weight of the next step.

‘Ben’s engaging style created a space that allowed me to be comfortable to share experiences. He challenged me and asked insightful questions so I left sessions with clear objectives to make impactful change.’
Chief People Officer, UK Bank
The Problem

A young HR professional at a UK bank is transitioning to Chief People Officer. But she lacks leadership presence, particularly in board meetings with older male executives. The client feels the pressure to prove herself, manage her critical voice, and demonstrate influence within the organisation.

The Diagnosis

Client challenges include feeling pressure, uncertainty, and the need to demonstrate influence and leadership. She also struggles with imposter syndrome and a struggle to adapt to the male dominated culture.

The client also seeks to transition from a firefighting style to a more strategic and delegating leadership style.

The Design

We focused on building self confidence, leadership skills, and impact in board meetings.

We worked on managing her critical voice, imposter syndrome and strategies for stress management.

We also explored ways to improve relationship dynamics with members of the exec team.

The Delivery

The coaching sessions included the co-creation of strategies for managing stress, improving eating and sleeping habits, and enhancing mental well-being.

We also focused on developing the client’s leadership presence, communication skills, and confidence in boardroom settings.

The Evaluation

The client left with an increased feeling of self confidence, enhanced communication skills, and effective stress management.

The client’s ability to have more impact in board meeting presentations (being vocally stronger and answering challenges better) was also developed.

Feedback from the exec team noted she was ‘managing stakeholders better’, showed ‘stronger leadership presence and gravitas’, and is ‘more assertive and firmer.’

Sixty leaders in a Clean Growth Fund forum theatre session

Clean Growth Fund

Sixty leaders. One day. Real practice that stuck.

Clean Growth Fund needed sixty leaders to maintain culture while scaling at pace.

No boring slide decks, no sitting in rows, no being talked at.

Instead we designed a bespoke and experiential day blending forum theatre, interactive activities and dynamic group coaching.

Team coaching

Values in motion.

‘Ben’s ability to bring values and personal brand to life was exceptional. He created a space where we felt comfortable to reflect and challenge thinking. What stood out most was Ben’s talent for making complex concepts accessible and practical.’
Stakeholder, UK Sport
The Problem

UK Sport athletes, particularly elite riders, face challenges aligning personal and professional values, impacting their decision-making and relationships within the sport.

The Diagnosis

Recognising the need for athletes to reflect on their values and create a culture of mutual respect and trust, we designed an interactive and introspective session to explore personal and professional values and branding, in a supportive environment.

The Design

The session featured interactive and reflective activities to help athletes understand the importance of aligning values, reflect on UK Sport values, and navigate challenging scenarios while staying true to their core values.

The Delivery

The session began with an introduction to the importance of values alignment and personal branding.

Athletes engaged in self-reflection exercises, identified personal and professional values, and discussed scenarios challenging their values.

Practical actions were brainstormed to help uphold values under pressure, and participants reflected on their main takeaways.

The Evaluation

‘My key takeaway was about the importance of aligning my values…’

‘Ben’s session was very thought-provoking; I will keep my core values in mind as I live my life and deal with owners…’
